McConnell-Week 1
What an exciting week! This experience is unlike any other experience I've had thus far in my life, however I can already tell that it is a necessary journey towards an even bigger one which involves educating the future. Going into the week I had a wave of emotions flood over me. I wanted to ensure that my nerves didn't get the best of me and that I could show that I deserve to be the students student teacher, with the hopes that they will respect me just as they do their other teachers. This week has been a week of acclimation, and not just for me. The students were given the syllabus and course overview on day 1, this was done for all 5 class periods (3 Freshman PE and 2 strength and conditioning). Students were then assigned their PE lockers on day 2, and given a PE presentation on day 3 where they learned all about the different PE electives they could take as they progress through the grades. Friday was another day to tie up any loose ends students who did not get their lockers taken care of were able to do so.
Monday will be the first time that the students will dress out for PE. The freshman classes will be running the Pacer. I created a google classroom for all the freshman classes so that any information pertaining to the class can be given to them in that way since all students have a chrome book. For Monday, students will be instructed to access google classroom to answer what their overall goal is for the Pacer and how they plan to achieve that goal. Also, through google classroom the students were instructed to fill out a "Getting to know you" form. This gave me the opportunity to read through my student's answers and really get a feel for how they are feeling about the class, physical activity, and anything else that they wanted to share. I had the opportunity all week to take attendance, and completely butcher some of their names, however I made a point to learn the names of those students whose names I had trouble with.
For next week, they will do the Pacer Monday, and Basketball on Tuesday and Thursday. Wednesday we will be down in the weight room for "Weight room Wednesday". Whereas, Friday we will be working on fitness for "Fitness Friday". A lot of the students expressed on their google forms that they would like to learn more about fitness, such as correct form, what is involved in an exercise program and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Using Illinois Learning Standards: 10-3: ILSS 20A: Apply the principles and components of health-related and fitness as applied to learning and performance of physical activities/ Natl Std 3: The physically literate individual demonstrates the skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.
I am excited to actually teach next week, and get into an even better groove. I hope my students are forgiving of any mistakes I may make, but I hope like other experiences I have had in my life I can modify and adjust and I know it may not happen next week and that might be something that comes in time. My cooperating teacher is great about feedback on any ideas I have, and has really allowed me to feel comfortable asking any questions I may have.

Ms. McConnell,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your week 1 post. Your blog highlights some excellent details of your first week and how you have already had the opportunity to become acclimated and begin to plan for next week. I do wonder if this was something you were familiar with based on your past or if your cooperating teacher had a hand in getting you to this place. The Google classroom you will be running for the Pacer appears to be a very engaging way for students to be involved and ideal for you to get to know your students. Was this your idea or apart of the curriculum or a little of both?
For week 2 it is important that along with the great details and experiences you also write about how they are connected to the IPTS and explicitly call these connections out in your blog. You had several opportunities last week that fit really well with the standards. I look forward to seeing this moving forward.
Have a great week 2!
Dr. Austin
